History

The San Nicolas Education Foundation was founded by six American former volunteers – three couples – who had lived and worked in the rural town of San Nicolas, Nicaragua for two-year terms with the organization Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM) from 2012 to 2017. Along with a variety of other community projects, the volunteers worked with the local high school, the Instituto Publico Carolina Camas Arauz, to strengthen its English education program.

After VMM closed and the last volunteers left San Nicolas in 2017, these former volunteers sought a way to stay connected with the community and to address some of the economic injustices they had witnessed while living in San Nicolas. With a generous grant from VMM, they started a scholarship fund that would support education in San Nicolas, and the San Nicolas Education Foundation became an official nonprofit in early 2018.
